Health Management

Management Fundamentals for PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Success – sustained effective performance – for the individual professional and for the institution will require  disciplinary excellence, strategic leadership, and management competencies.  And the growing complexity of healthcare and public health makes it all the more important that MPH graduates develop the skills needed to lead and manage complex institutions.

The Certificate in Health Management offers the focused professional preparation that MPH students will require to secure leadership positions within their chosen fields. The Certificate builds on the School’s rich history of preparing graduates for management positions in healthcare. It provides students whose primary focus is healthcare policy or another public health discipline with a complementary foundation  in the component fields of institutional and organizational management that will prepare them to be leaders within their discipline.

The Certificate is for students who are interested in acquiring some financial and strategic skills in addition to their primary discipline. It does not fulfill requirements of the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education necessary for some internships and administrative fellowships. (Individuals wishing to focus on management may also want to consider the School's MPH for Healthcare Management program.)

The Certificate capitalizes on Columbia’s New York City locale which provides fertile ground for both classroom and experiential learning that leverage Mailman School connections with major hospitals and public health organizations.
