Practicum
The practicum—essentially an internship in the field—is a required component of an MPH degree, and many Columbia students find it to be a rewarding and enlightening experience. During your practicum you will work alongside public health professionals, experience the day-to-day realities of the field and have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in class to make an active contribution in public health.
The Mailman School faculty have a vast network of contacts from community-based institutions in New York City to international aid organizations around the globe. Within the academic department you join, you will find many well-established relationships with government agencies and healthcare institutions where you can spend your practicum.
Accelerated MPH students have the option of a client-based practicum in which a few students work together as consultants for one organization—perhaps a domestic or international NGO or health department—on a particular issue. Some Accelerated MPH students may be able to create a practicum experience within the context of their job.
Practicums may be scheduled during the winter intersession, the summer, or over an extended multi-semester timetable.
