The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) offers a specialized Master of Public Health in Healthcare Management degree designed to integrate three areas of expertise: management and leadership, health policy, and public health and health systems. It provides students with the management skills of a business school education, but does so in a context that emphasizes the unique nature of the healthcare system.
Students receive the management and policy knowledge needed to be a healthcare leader in a rapidly changing and complex healthcare environment by examining the political, legal, and economic forces that shape the healthcare system, understanding the core principles of public health, and receiving a hands-on immersion into the principles and practices of effective management. Faculty include full-time Columbia professors as well as senior practitioners who are especially adept at relating classroom theory to the realities of the workplace.

Full-Time Program
The full-time program spans three semesters and a summer practicum. The 16 months course of study includes ongoing professional development activities and a professional practicum that provides valuable fieldwork experience. The program is well-suited for students with minimal to no health-related work experience. Students are prepared for entry and midlevel managerial roles in healthcare and obtain the foundation necessary for the development of senior executive skills.
The Part-Time Management Program
The part-time management (PTM) program is geared towards candidates currently working in healthcare who are looking to gain a broad understanding of the healthcare system and insight into the influences of policy decisions in the healthcare industry, while developing management and leadership skills. Courses integrate professional experience into the classroom. The program is completed in 28 months.
The Executive MPH Program
The Executive MPH (EMPH) provides working healthcare professionals with a significant opportunity to hone and augment their knowledge and skills in order to advance their careers. The program is highly selective, with limited enrollment that draws participants from a wide range of health-related fields. Physicians, administrators, and other healthcare executives attend classes for one long weekend (Thursday to Sunday) a month for 24 months.
