2024 Biostatistics Graduate Student Research Seminar (GSRS) Report

The Graduate Student Research Seminar (GSRS) holds monthly sessions for current doctoral students in the Biostatistics department. These sessions are used to disseminate current research being conducted at the doctoral level in the department and for students to practice presenting in front of their peers. This space is also used as a platform for communication across doctoral cohorts, where students can discuss the expectations for the PhD program and share advice and experiences.
This fall we held a “Research Talks” meeting, where a panel of professors from the department provided an overview of their research and highlighted opportunities for students to engage with them in their work. This event gives students the opportunity to network with faculty for research opportunities. We also held an Internship Panel, highlighting PhD students in Pharma/Consulting and an Oral Defense practice.
In the Spring we plan to hold more special seminars, such as Q&A’s on the Qualifying and Oral Comprehensive Exam experience, and a Dissertation Defense practice talk.
GSRS is a unique event held within Columbia’s Biostatistics department and we look forward to continuing to provide a supportive environment to help students become more effective communicators.
