MPH: Sociomedical Sciences
Students in Sociomedical Sciences (SMS) apply social science theories and methods—ranging from anthropology, psychology, and sociology to economics, ethics, and history—to current public health issues. Graduates explore an expansive array of issues that includes sexuality, aging, health promotion, urban health, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, drug use, healthcare access, and immigrant health.
Competencies
Upon graduation, MPH students in Sociomedical Sciences are able to demonstrate the following competencies:
- Apply concepts, theories, and methods from the social and behavioral sciences to address public health challenges through program and policy development.
- Explain relevant mixed-research methodologies and assess reliability and validity of measures used in research to study theory-driven research question.
- Identify, collect and/or analyze qualitative/ quantitative data through methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography, participant observation, R programming, and/or inferential statistical analysis.
- Communicate research and program findings through recommendations and limitations that are appropriate for varied audiences and sectors.
- Employ ethical and culturally competent frameworks in research design and conduct.
