MPH: Biostatistics

The Biostatistics Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree is designed to enhance the quantitative skills of public health practitioners who use statistics frequently in their work. This masters is intended primarily for specialists in public health who use and adapt statistical procedures for health and medical care programs, or serve in a technical capacity as resource person and collaborators in field and programmatic studies.

Competencies

Upon satisfactory completion of the MPH in Biostatistics degree program, students are able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Apply descriptive techniques commonly used to summarize public health data. 
  • Apply common statistical methods for inference. 
  • Apply descriptive and inferential methodologies according to the type of study design for answering a particular research question. 
  • Interpret results of statistical analyses found in public health studies. 
  • Develop written or oral presentations based on statistical analyses for both public health professionals and educated lay audiences. 

Admissions Information

Applicants should have some background in college mathematics, including at least a year of calculus. A semester of linear/matrix algebra is highly encouraged. Students with strong scores on the quantitative section of the GRE are given first preference.
