Graduate Student Research Seminars (GSRS)
Significant Moments, 2022 Issue
GSRS is a monthly event for current doctoral students of the Biostatistics department to practice presenting their work in front of their peers and to discuss the milestones to getting a PhD while sharing advice. This fall we held a “Professor Talks” meeting, where GSRS opens to faculty of the department, allowing professors to provide an overview of their research and highlight opportunities for students to engage with them in their work. This event has been very successful in the past and gives students the opportunity to network with faculty for research opportunities.
We also held a panel on summer internships where doctoral students discussed their own internship experiences and the application process in a broad range of industries including Google, Johnson & Johnson, Morgan Stanley, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Coming up for GSRS, there will be a Q&A discussion about the Oral Comprehensive Exam where students can engage with those who have previously completed their Exam, and obtain advice on how to prepare for it, and what to expect. Students will also be able to give brief talks about their current work in our upcoming Research Speed Talks meetings. Lastly, GSRS will hold dissertation practice talks this fall and spring, in which one student presents their work ahead of their dissertation.
