Career Day

Career Day is held two to four times per year. We have one or two fairs in both the Fall and in the Spring. We also offer smaller events such as our annual Northeast Regional Administrative Fellowship Fair in the fall. Our Fall 2024 Virtual Career Day will be held on Friday, November 8 from 11am-3pm EST, virtually on CareerEco. Registration on CareerEco is required for the event.

Note: Career Day is for Mailman students and alumni only unless otherwise noted. For details, contact Career Services at msphocs@cumc.columbia.edu.

FAQ

Who from the Mailman School should attend?

First year students seeking information about summer internships or practica, and/or post-graduate opportunities, as well as students graduating in February, May, and October. Mailman School alumni can also attend.

What should I wear?

Virtual fairs consist of brief video chats with employers and so for this reason, we recommend wearing business attire and ensuring your webcam is set up to display an appropriate and non-distracting background image if possible. In-person fairs include brief chats with employers and we recommend business attire also.

What should I do if I am seeking an internship and my employer(s) of choice have provided only full time job descriptions or vice versa? What should I do if my employer(s) of choice have provided descriptions for positions in which I am not interested?

Be proactive. Seize the opportunity to discuss your interests and market yourself! There is always a chance that an organization can structure an internship for a proactive student. In addition, if you make a good contact, you can stay in touch with them until you are ready to look for a full time job, and they will remember you positively.

Should I RSVP?

Yes, you MUST sign up via CareerLink. Please note that our virtual fair will be hosted on Zoom with breakout rooms dedicated to each employer. You will be able to directly enter the breakout rooms of the employers you are interested in and explore multiple breakout rooms. At the in-person fair, you will need to bring your student ID or other ID and check in before entering the event.

Any tips for international students?

We require employers to indicate in their registration form whether they are open to hiring international students, and if so, if they are open to hiring interns only, hiring for Optional Practical Training, or petitioning for the H1B visa. We encourage international students to be open-minded and have meetings with all employers, but to consider focusing on those who have stated they are open to hiring international students.

What about disability accommodations?

We are very committed to ensuring that all of our events and programs are accessible to students with disabilities. Please email us before the event (preferably 10 days prior) to request accommodations. All students can also make an appointment or request tips or strategies for making the most of the fair, before the event.

Career Day Tips

In preparation for Career Day, review the websites of employers scheduled to attend the event to learn about their philosophies, goals, work, and opportunities. Preparation also includes formulating appropriate lines of inquiry based upon your research.

  • DO NOT approach an employer and ask them to "tell me about your organization and the opportunities available." (Please research beforehand instead.)
  • DO introduce yourself by stating your department, your graduation date, and (based on your research) the types of opportunities that are available with that employer that both interest you and are a good match for your education and experience.

Additional Preparation

  1. Research participating employers by visiting their websites prior to the event. Job descriptions from those who send them in advance will be made available to you before Career Day. Refer to this website for tips on employer research.

  2. Prior to Career Day, think about what you’re looking for in a position and what you have to offer. Prepare a two-minute pitch that includes: your name, department, prior degree(s), current degree program, brief description of relevant experience, and your immediate career goals. Formulate questions for the various employers attending the event. Refer to the Big Interview for tips on interviewing. We also provide a workshop on career fair prep prior to the event--check CareerLink for the date/time.

  3. Prioritize the list of employers you’d like to meet.

  4. Come to our workshops on how to prepare for Career Day and visit our Courseworks page to see a recorded video of the workshop.

On Career Day

Wear business/interview attire. You will be able to upload your resume to the platform before the event. For the in-person event, bring several printed copies of your resume. Also:

  • Plan to arrive for the start of Career Day and to stay until its conclusion.
  • While waiting to talk with each representative, review the information they have available on their employer profile and plan the questions you want to ask.
  • If you do not have an opportunity to meet your favorite employer, you can still apply for their opportunities online.
  • Introduce yourself and have questions prepared. When you have concluded your discussion, ask for email or contact information for follow-up purposes and a thank you note, if appropriate.
  • After each interaction, jot down quick notes for future reference.

Post Career Day

No more than two weeks following Career Day, be sure to send follow-up emails to those employers you wish to pursue as well as cover letters and resumes to those with whom you did have an opportunity to speak.
