Bella and Her Mom
From Lisa, LEGACY Mom
Why did you decide to participate in the LEGACY Girls Study?
It was a no-brainer, really. As someone who has done research as part of my own educational journey, I know the value of longitudinal data, getting the right sample size and the need for reliable subjects. I was happy to be a part of that. I have read much of the solid research that CPIC has published and I knew we were in good hands, and part of a solid, valid study. And of course, the research question was appealing and hits close to home for every woman, as cancer has impacted just about every person’s life that I know. I never had a doubt about whether or not to participate.
With young girls involved in many activities, why did you decide to make the LEGACY study a priority?
Again, the value of participation for us as a family, was key. And honestly, our contact, Shanika, has made it so easy to fit into our schedule. I would have worked harder or given up more to be involved, but the study has made it so simple for families to participate. Coming to our home at convenient times has been wonderful, and exceeded our expectations. We have participated in other research studies and this has, by far, been the best overall experience.
How did you feel about recommending your friends to participate in our study?
I did major outreach to gain subjects last summer. I believe I was responsible for about 8 more. I feel strongly that this is the least we can do in order to “give back” to the community. Knowledge is a powerful thing. I have told my friends with daughters in this age group how easy and rewarding being a part of the study has been for us.
Now that you have been in the study for a year, how has your overall experience been with the study?
It has been easy, rewarding, and valuable. It is interesting to read the research questions, and to consider our lifestyle’s impact on future disease. As someone who works with children, I’ve been interested in how developmentally appropriate the questions are, and how my daughter has grown over the past year. I think the study is quite sensitive to young girl’s issues in how the study has been designed and how the questions are posed.
There is nothing intrusive or difficult about participating. The interviewer is sensitive, sweet and accommodating. We look forward to her visit.
With a five–year study, one must be committed to finishing, and I knew that would not be a problem. I am proud to be a part of the Legacy Girls Study.
From Bella, LEGACY Daughter
Why did you decide to participate in the LEGACY Girls Study?
I chose to participate in the Legacy Girls study because I think it is really important to find a cure for cancer. My neighbor, Esther, is very involved, and I know she does very great things. I wanted to help her do her best work.
Did you give a blood sample? Would you be willing to continue to give blood samples?
No, but next time I have a visit, I think I am ready to. On past visits, I gave a saliva sample.
Are there other types of gift cards you would like to receive in the future?
I like Jamba Juice and Starbucks a lot!
Any special talent (e.g., sing, dance, video game expert, etc.) or hobbies?
I am very active. I like to sing, dance and act. I play volleyball now and softball in the spring. I am on a competitive dance team. I am in two plays right now, and go to choir very early in the morning. I also speak Mandarin. I am pretty good with technology too.
Any pet(s)? If so, what type and name of your pet(s)?
I have Sasha, the labradoodle, two Siamese cats, a turtle, and 13 chickens. My goats are taking a vacation.
What is your favorite color and why?
My favorite color is teal because it reminds me of the sea, and it is a happy, calm color.
What is your favorite place to visit and why?
Speaking of the sea, I went to Greece this summer, and it was amazing. I met relatives I didn’t know I had. I loved the food, the people, the shopping, and the sea.
How has your overall experience been with the study?
It has been really fun to be a part of this study. I am just happy I can help with something so important that may change people’s life in the future.
