2024 Biostatistics Promotions

Shing Lee, PhD

Professor Shing Lee to Professor of Biostatistics at CUMC in July 2024

Dr. Lee's research interest is in the implementation of novel designs for early stage clinical trials.  She is particularly interested in the development of novel statistical methods for dose optimization of targeted and immunotherapy cancer agents, such as methods that incorporate adverse events types and grades and patient reported outcomes for early stage trials, and methods for summarizing and visualizing adverse events that better reflect the toxicity burden of patients.

In addition, Dr. Lee has over twenty years of experience in statistical consulting.  She has assisted numerous investigators from a variety of medical disciplines in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies.

Christine Mauro, PhD

Professor Christine Mauro was promoted to Associate Professor of Biostatistics at CUMC in July 2024

Christine Mauro's research interests include the analysis of clinical trials, longitudinal data analysis, statistical learning techniques, and the application of statistics to problems in mental health research. Dr. Mauro is also very interested in teaching Biostatistics in the health sciences, specifically to a non-mathematically trained audience.

Yifei Sun, PhD

Professor Yifei Sun was promoted to Associate Professor of Biostatistics and granted tenure in July 2024

Dr. Sun's substantive area of research is statistical and machine learning methods related to time-to-event outcomes and longitudinal measurements. She has developed nonparametric and semiparametric approaches to analyze marked recurrent event processes, where longitudinal measurements are observed at the occurrence of recurrent events (e.g., clinical visits) and a dependent terminal event (e.g., death), precludes the occurrence of recurrent events. She has also developed statistical methods to deal with left truncation bias in survival analysis. Her recent works include decision tree learning for dynamic prediction of time-to-event outcomes and event history analysis using electronic health records data. Besides the methodological research, Dr. Sun works closely with clinicians and epidemiologists on various research areas, including coronavirus disease 2019, Alzheimer’s disease, and infectious diseases.

Anthrony Guerrero

Anthony Guerrero was promoted to Senior Grants Administrator

Anthony Guerrero, our fearless grants manager, helps to keep the Department afloat by ensuring that our grants’ finances are in order, while meeting rigid deadlines. He joined Columbia University in 1998 and has been with the Department of Biostatistics since 2006. For his exemplary work he received the 2021 Staff Award in Excellence from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. In his nomination, colleagues described him as hardworking, organized, effective, and reliable, to name a few of his strengths. This is also not the first time Anthony has been recognized for his tremendous work; he previously won the Staff Award in 2006. In addition to being an extremely diligent worker, Anthony helps to make everyone feel welcome in the Department. - From 2021 Staff Highlight
