Nicole A. Haberland

Profile Headshot

Overview

Nicole Haberland is a globally recognized leader in public health, gender equity, and education, with over 25 years of experience advancing research, policy, and practice. Her research and program innovation have addressed issues related to gender equity, education, women’s and girls’ empowerment, sexual and reproductive health, civic participation, and youth. Nicole conducted pathbreaking research that shifted sexuality and HIV education by integrating critical thinking about gender and power. She co-led development of It’s All One Curriculum—a widely used resource translated into multiple languages—which has informed sexuality and HIV education programs globally and the U.S. Her research utilizes diverse methods, such as systematic reviews, including on gender-related barriers to schooling and pathways through which education impacts health, as well as implementation science and impact evaluations, such as the randomized controlled trial of GirlsRead!, a literacy and empowerment program for adolescent girls. Nicole’s efforts to make data and evidence more accessible and used include the development of the gender and power metrics database, and the Evidence for Gender and Education Resource – a website that synthesizes research and maps programs to drive evidence-based practice and policy. She comes to Columbia from the Population Council, where she co-founded and directed the Gender, Education, Justice, and Equity initiative. Nicole is an alum of Pop Fam, where she received her MPH.
