Daniel P. Giovenco, PhD, MPH

Daniel P. Giovenco, PhD, MPH is a social and behavioral scientist whose research identifies multilevel determinants of nicotine and tobacco use inequities and generates evidence to inform structurally-based policy solutions. Specifically, he conducts population surveillance of emergent and evolving nicotine use behaviors and examines ways in which community-level factors (e.g., local policies, exposure to tobacco marketing) can mitigate or exacerbate longstanding tobacco use disparities. A more recent line of research explores cannabis industry marketing tactics and the co-use of cannabis and nicotine. He has methodological expertise in survey data analysis, geographic information systems, field data collection, and policy evaluation.

Dr. Giovenco has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration and was a 2016 recipient of the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5), an R01-equivalent grant awarded to recent doctoral graduates with the “intellect, scientific creativity, drive, and maturity bypass the traditional postdoctoral training period.” Currently, Dr. Giovenco is Principal Investigator on an R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to investigate the impact and equity of policy interventions to reduce tobacco retailer density in communities.

Dr. Giovenco has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in leading public health journals such as JAMA, American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and Tobacco Control. He has been invited to present his research to organizations including the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; the Food and Drug Law Institute; and the National Association of Attorneys General.

In addition to research, Dr. Giovenco teaches graduate courses in program planning and evaluation. He is a member of Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Columbia Population Research Center, and the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion at the Mailman School of Public Health, where he serves as Director of Student Mentoring.
