Overview
Tonguç Yaman, DrPH, MPH, CHCIO, is an Associate in Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. He teaches "Applied Regression" and "Categorical Data Analysis" in the Online MS in Epidemiology program and "Principles of Epidemiology III" during the summer semester. He earned his bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Bogaziçi University and a master’s in health policy and management from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. In October 2024, Yaman earned his Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from Columbia's Epidemiology Department, focusing on data visualization and modeling to support informed public health decision-making.
Born and raised in Türkiye, Dr. Yaman has lived in Switzerland, England, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States, bringing a global perspective to his work in public health and education. Since 2006, he has made significant contributions to healthcare systems in New York City and the surrounding area. Notably, Dr. Yaman spearheaded the development of advanced information systems for community physicians, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to achieve goals previously considered unattainable. His initiatives empowered approximately 2,500 community providers, demonstrating an extraordinary ability to innovate and implement solutions in challenging environments. Earlier in his career, he held roles at Citibank, IBM, and Dell, which provided a strong technical foundation for his public health work.
In his teaching, Dr. Yaman integrates artificial intelligence tools, encouraging students to actively use and reference AI in their coursework. His extensive IT background enables him to mentor students effectively during class projects, preparing them for a data-driven public health landscape.
Since January 2022, Dr. Yaman has served on the Board of Directors of Phoenix House NY/LI, contributing to the Real Estate and Audit Risk & Compliance Committees. In this role, he helps ensure the organization acts responsibly toward its stakeholders.
An avid athlete, Dr. Yaman has completed seven marathons and undertaken extensive cycling trips, including routes from NYC to Miami, NYC to Niagara Falls, and Istanbul to Marmaris. He also enjoys swimming, rowing, cooking, woodworking, programming, and exploring AI. With two adult children living abroad, he divides his time between New York City and Istanbul, embracing the best of both cities.
