Climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of drought, heatwaves, and extreme weather events in the LAC region, with profound impacts on agriculture, food production, and the overall well-being of communities in the region. This session will explore the role of climate-driven extreme weather events on food production and supply chains, identifying vulnerable regions and communities.  Experts from the region will examine existing policies and explore potential mitigation measures, share their insights on community-driven initiatives and solutions that foster resilience and sustainability in the face of climate-induced challenges. Webinar 4: Populations on the Move: How Climate Change Affects Migrants in LAC Transient Camps

The Latin American and Caribbean sub-continent has seen a significant rise in migrants-based transient camps. This is related to multiple factors, including climate change, risks during transit and social marginalisation and exclusion upon arrival in host countries, especially amongst migrants in irregular status and living in poverty. There is growing evidence around how such camps are created and sustained over time, as well as health risks related to poor material conditions, lack of access to clean water, stigma and discrimination. In the meantime, migrants living in these camps find a way to resist and develop unique identities as they build complex social layers in their everyday activities. Boston University CAFE - GIS 101 - Data to Maps in Q

The role of maps to support local, national and global public health decision making has steadily increased over the last two decades with the expansion of open-source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. The goal of this workshop is to provide an introduction to GIS with a specific focus on applications to public health. Through hands-on, immersive exercises using QGIS the workshop will prepare you to feel comfortable communicating with other GIS users, and learn the basics of view and querying spatial data, as well as produce maps in an applied learning environment to support public health decision making. This the first GIS introductory level mapping workshop for novice GIS users, applicable to all climate health fields. Topics covered include navigating the QGIS software, basic mapping, querying spatial data, development and basic processing of geographical datasets for mapping. The session will last 2 hours with a Q&A opportunity afterward. Download and install instructions for QGIS will be provided after registration. This webinar will be recorded and available through the CAFE website.

NIH Translational Science in Climate and Health Webinar Series

From March to August 2024, NIA will host a webinar series (1 hour monthly sessions) on Translational Science in Climate and Health. In these monthly meetings, expert members from the U.S. and abroad will explore key issues in the translation of scientific insights around climate and health into actionable interventions that reduce harms from climate change — the goal of the NIH’s Climate Change and Health Initiative Strategic Framework. Speakers will cover a range of topics from case studies in climate and health interventions, frameworks in climate-related implementation science, the principles of team science, systems-based approaches, and the application of environmental and climate justice. Each webinar will end with an opportunity for questions and discussion, particularly as they focus on the well-being and health of older aged adults.

Climate Forces on the Health and Well-being of Children on the Move in LAC | March 5, 2024

Climate change is an emerging yet understudied force on the health and well-being of international migrant children and adolescents. Over the past decade, we have seen a steady rise in the numbers of children traveling, especially unaccompanied or traveling with adults they do not know.  Social and health risks and vulnerabilities among migrant children have been recognised globally, yet the relevance of climate change as a direct and indirect driver of health outcomes is less understood. Local evidence from LAC can contribute to current global discussions around the health and protection of children on the move.

The Role of Public Health Schools in a Climate Changing World | Feb 21, 2024

Climate change poses significant health risks. Public Health professionals play a vital role, and training institutions must prepare future professionals to address climate-related health challenges effectively. Participate in this discussion where leading voices from the field will explore proactive measures public health schools can take to incorporate climate and planetary health into their curricula to ensure this generation of health professionals is equipped to prevent, prepare for, and respond to climate-related health impacts.

The NIH CH Scholars Program seeks to bring climate and health scientists from outside the U.S. federal government to NIH to share their knowledge and expertise. The goal of the program is for climate and health scientists to support NIH institutes, centers, and offices in developing a stronger climate and health knowledge base in the areas of the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative’s Strategic Framework.

Climate and Health Foundation Consortium on Climate & Health Science Policy, Climate and Human Health Fellowship: trains physicians to examine and advance evidence-based policies that help build climate-resilient communities and health systems.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the field of climate science with a specialization in extreme heat and human health needed at the Climate & Water Lab in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Rice University. The position requires a strong background in climate science & modeling, as well as with high-resolution weather and climate instrumental data. Experience in numerical/statistical and geospatial modeling is required, and experience running CAM5/6 and/or CESM is preferred. Both domestic and international applicants are welcome. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Call for proposals: WHO project on ethical climate and health research
Deadline: 17 June 2024, 17:00 CEST

The WHO Health Ethics and Governance Unit invites proposals designed to help facilitate the promotion of ethically sound and equitable climate and health research. We particularly welcome proposals reflecting the priorities and experiences of communities most affected by climate change. We are also aware that there is a serious lack of data regarding the health impacts of climate change for some populations and on some topics: the experiences of local and Indigenous Peoples are particularly under-represented. The impacts of climate change on mental health, and effective policy responses are also under-researched. We therefore also welcome proposals in these and other under-represented areas. Click here for more details

Act Now: Support CMS in Reducing Hospital Emissions!

For the first time, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed collecting, monitoring, assessing, and addressing hospital emissions. It’s a pivotal move towards regulating greenhouse gas production in healthcare, an industry responsible for approximately 8.5% of US emissions. The TEAM Decarbonization and Resilience Initiative is a voluntary program recently announced by the CMS Innovation Center (CMMI) as part of the proposed Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM). The Initiative has two elements: 

1. Voluntary reporting on metrics in four priority areas (organizational, building energy, anesthetic gas and transportation). 
2. Technical assistance with reducing emissions. In addition, hospital participants may receive CMS recognition. 

The Initiative will help advance low-emissions, resilient health care across the U.S. Health professionals are critical in communicating to CMS that this Initiative is a necessary step toward improving patient outcomes, reducing emissions, and building climate-resilient hospitals. CMS needs to hear from health professionals like you. The comment period is open until June 10th, 5:00 pm ET. 

Climate for Health, Ambassador Training Program - This free, three-hour training equips health professionals with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and resources to speak and act confidently on climate change solutions. Three units of Continuing Medical Education or Nursing CE are available upon completion. Through the generous support of our donors, we are able to offer this course at no cost to you or the training participants.
