2023 Computing Club Report

The Columbia Biostatistics Computing Club hosts seminars focusing on computational topics often encountered in biostatistics research. These sessions provide hands-on learning at various skill levels, bringing new students up to speed and addressing more advanced problems with others. A graduate student volunteer runs each session and prepares tutorials on topics of interest, including R, LaTeX, and Python.   

In the past, we have hosted monthly meetings on a wide range of topics, including the terminal and R packages, such as ggplot, gtsummary, and Shiny. This year we are excited to be holding our meetings in person.   

In addition to past sessions on LaTeX and how to set up your computer as a statistician, we plan to offer new sessions on SQL, package development in R, and Beamer presentations. We will also collaborate with the Columbia Mailman School’s Causal Inference Learning Group and the Career China Club.   

Our overarching goal is to teach students valuable skills in their research and their work in the industry. We hope our meetings encourage students to interact with each other and to build a community outside of coursework. This year’s organizers are Charlotte Fowler, Amy Pitts, Safiya Sirota, Ziyi Wang, Gustavo Garcia-Franceschini, and Guadalupe (Lupe) Antonio Lopez.
