Dates, Practices & Accommodations
Throughout the school year, many holidays will be observed by members of our School community. It is important that we remain mindful and respectful of the diverse traditions and practices associated with these observances and adhere to the University’s Religious Accommodation Policy. For a list of the religious holidays and observances that are most likely to impact students, faculty, and staff at Columbia during this academic year, please refer to the Religious Holidays 2024-2025 Calendar.
There are a few ways all of us can contribute to a more accommodating environment:
- Flexible Scheduling – Be open to accommodating requests for flexible schedules or time off during holidays. Some individuals may observe religious practices, such as breaking a fast, that require adjustments to their work or study hours, or that require completing travel before sundown.
- Prayer Rooms – Support students, faculty, and staff who use prayer rooms. Columbia provides access to more than a dozen dedicated prayer rooms, including four on the CUIMC campus.
- Reconsider Food – Be aware that some students, faculty, and staff may be fasting during holidays or have certain religious dietary considerations, so reconsider if food is needed, how much is needed, and include appropriate options.
- Encourage Communication – Foster an open dialogue where individuals feel comfortable expressing their needs or concerns related to holiday observances. Encourage participation in student organizations or Employee Resource Groups. Use inclusive language and avoid making assumptions about an individual’s religious or cultural practices.
