CSRI 2025 Research Training Continuity Initiative

Recognizing the unique funding uncertainties currently faced by the academic scientific community, we have launched the CSRI 2025 Research Training Continuity Initiative (RTCI) a special, one-time opportunity offered as part of the Columbia Summer Research Institute (CSRI).

Key Details

  • One-Time Tuition-Free Opportunity: A limited number of CUIMC-affiliated postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty will be eligible to attend CSRI 2025 tuition-free
  • Mandatory Fees: Tuition-free participants will be responsible for approximately $1,525 in mandatory program and university fees
  • Eligibility: This opportunity is limited to CUIMC-affiliated postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty who are not in credit-bearing academic programs. Degree/Certificate/Certification-seeking students, including those admitted for Summer or Fall 2025, and individuals from institutions outside of CUIMC are not eligible.
  • Program Expectations: Tuition-free participants will be held to the same professional and academic standards as tuition-paying participants, including required class attendance, participation, and completion of assignments.
  • Academic Credit Policy
    • By default, tuition-free participants earn zero academic credits
    • However, as a special one-time exception, tuition-free participants have until June 30, 2026 to secure funding and pay the full tuition. Upon payment, their zero-credit courses will be converted retroactively to academic credits.

Application Process

Applicants who would like to attend CSRI under the RTCI program must submit the following:

The CSRI Self-Supported Application components consisting of:

  • The Mailman School of Public Health CSRI Application;
    • Transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate training programs are required;
  • The CSRI 2025 Application Supplement through which candidates are asked to provide a few additional pieces of information and upload the supporting materials listed below:
    • Curriculum vitae;
    • A personal statement of no more than 500 words, describing research interests, career goals, and reasons for applying to the program;
  • Two separate references who must each complete the CSRI 2025 Recommendation Form and upload a letter of reference. References must be from individuals who can comment knowledgeably on the candidate's research potential.
    • The first reference must come from the candidate's department chair or division chief and must indicate that the candidate will be given time off (no clinical or work duties) for the duration of the program.

Applicants will also submit a secondary application consisting of:

  • The CSRI 2025 Research Training Continuity Initiative Application which requires:
    • A description of the research project that the candidate intends to pursue during CSRI. The description, in a maximum of 500 words, should include the project's broad objectives and specific aims, research design and methods, and public health significance. Accepted students may update or change projects at the start of CSRI.
    • A separate signed letter on letterhead from their immediate supervisor explicitly stating that the candidate will be guaranteed time-off (i.e. no clinical duties or other work duties) for the entire duration of the CSRI program (July 7 - August 8, 2025).

RTCI FAQ

Who is eligible to participate in CSRI through the RTCI program?

Eligibility is limited to CUIMC-affiliated postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty.

The following individuals are not eligible:

  • Degree-seeking students, including those admitted for Summer or Fall 2025.
  • Individuals from institutions outside of CUIMC.

How is the tuition free-program (RTCI) different from the standard CSRI program?

All CSRI participants, regardless of application route, will receive the same program experience and are held to the same professional and academic standards. The only difference is that those participating in CSRI through RTCI do not earn academic credit and are not required to pay tuition.

How many tuition-free spots are there?

The number of tuition-free spots is limited. CSRI cohort sizes are intentionally kept small to maintain the integrated and interactive nature of the classes and to ensure 1:1 guidance for scholars.

If I am not accepted through the RTCI program, may I still be considered for CSRI if I have funding?

Yes, applicants to the RTCI program who are not accepted for a tuition-free spot may request to be considered for a tuition-paying spot if they have financial support through their departments, divisions, or other sources. This request can be made directly on the RTCI application form.

If I’m accepted into the standard CSRI program, can I later decide to switch to a tuition free-spot?

No, if you would like to participate in CSRI tuition-free, you must apply through the RTCI program. While it is possible to switch from a tuition-free spot to a tuition-paying spot, the reverse is not allowed.

Can I apply for financial aid or fee waivers for the mandatory fees?

Financial aid is not available for non-degree academic programs. While CSRI has received a one-time exception to offer a limited number of tuition-free spots for the Summer 2025 program, the mandatory fees of approximately $1,525 cannot be waived.

Can I apply for a scholarship for the mandatory fees?

CSRI scholarships may only be applied to tuition. Since tuition-free participants do not pay tuition, they are not eligible for CSRI scholarships.

For those wishing to earn academic credit and thereby paying tuition, scholarship information and application procedures may be found here.

When will admissions decisions be made?

Applicants will be notified by May 17, 2025.

May I defer my tuition-free admission until 2026?

No, the Research Training Continuity Initiative (RTCI) is a one-time opportunity for 2025 only. It was specifically designed to ensure continued access to essential research training during a particularly challenging time for the academic research community.

When is payment due?

For those participating in CSRI through RTCI, mandatory fees will be charged to student accounts upon registration in late June. Payment is typically due during the first week of August. Please note that billing and payments are managed centrally, and CSRI does not oversee these processes.

What is the process for converting my zero-credit courses into academic credits?

If funds become available to pay the tuition of $20,960 for the 10 academic credits typically earned through CSRI, RTCI participants have until June 30, 2026 to submit payment through a chartstring. Please contact csri@columbia.edu well in advance of the deadline to arrange this process.
